Choose the finish line
Write down what the property must look like when the cleanout is done. A sale handoff, a move, and reclaiming one room have different scopes. Name the rooms, fixed deadline, and items that must remain.
Make four decisions
Use four groups: keep, give to a specific person, possible reuse, and remove. Keep “possible reuse” separate from a guaranteed donation; receiving organizations decide what they can accept.
Protect the small things first
Move identification, deeds, financial records, medication, keys, jewelry, photos, and digital devices to a secure area. Back up and erase devices before they leave your control.
Build an item and access list
Count large pieces, photograph each room, and note stairs, narrow doors, elevators, gates, and the walking distance to the truck. This information makes an early estimate more useful.
Keep hazardous items outside the removal scope
Paint, chemicals, fuel, compressed cylinders, and unknown liquids need separate confirmation. Seattle transfer stations publish specific materials they do not accept, so identify these items before the work day.
Your next step
Use the checklist to build a clear request, then compare the municipal option with a private pickup based on access, timing, and item count. For service help, review house cleanout or prepare an estimate request.
